  • There’s no other explanation for this. Those who’ve written the JEE before—actually a couple of times—tell me that ever since the NTA took over the national exam in 2017, there’s been a fresh issue every year. Sometimes it’s technical glitches . Other times, it’s the way they score the exams, or award ranks to students. The pandemic didn’t help, because the NTA had to push back exam dates constantly and still make sure students got enough attempts under their belt. It’s a low-level mess each time. (View Highlight)

  • It has a luminous Board of Governors, staffed with senior officials from the IITs and IIMs. But who actually sets the papers, checks them, and award ranks is completely opaque. For a body that single-handedly wields power over the lives of 40 lakh students annually, it was set up with a paltry grant of Rs 25 crore (US$3 million), and post that, was expected to be self-sustainable.
